On the road we walk every day,
our friends did something amazing

🌏 On the same day, the whole world cleaned up together

September 7 to September 20, 2026

Hello! Here is the latest news from Green Action, part of the World Cleanup Day award program.
I'm Kwonseon Yoo, the editor.

September 20 was World Cleanup Day, an official UN international day.
It's a day when people in 190 countries clean up their own neighborhoods.

In Korea, the Korea Youth Work Agency, award centers across the country and the nonprofit Itaseoul joined forces.

Young people from 12 award centers across the country went out on foot, from school roads in Geochang to early-morning streets in Gumi and highway shoulders in Hwacheon, to take action for the planet.

This newsletter shares the records young people made together over the past two weeks.

On the school roads of Geochang-eup, what was where?

Every time a piece of litter is picked up, its location is saved. We put the 337 location points collected during the campaign on a map. The picture in each circle shows the most common type of litter at that spot, and the number shows how many items were picked up.

Where litter was picked up in Geochang-eup and what kind was found. The picture in each circle shows the most common item at that spot.

The map shows the school roads of Geochang-eup, South Gyeongsang. Three high schools and a middle school sit side by side here, and students walk these roads every morning and evening.

The most litter was found on the sidewalk in front of a school gate.
There were 72 items piled up at that one spot alone. This is what the road we pass every day really looks like.

Turning litter into knowledge

What we do on World Cleanup Day is saved as data. That data helps us understand why certain litter appears in certain places, along with the social and economic reasons behind it.

  • Cigarette butts are the most common item, anytime and anywhere
They ranked first in both the evening (60%) and early morning (48%), matching the Gumi average.
  • Evening in Bonggok-dong: 'drink it, then drop it' containers
We found 4.1 times more plastic bottles than the Gumi average, 1.8 times more cans and 1.4 times more plastic. This matches the single-use delivery containers seen in the photo.
  • Early morning in Hyeonggok-dong: lots of packaging
We found 25.7 times more plastic bags and wrappers than the evening amount in Bonggok-dong, and 1.7 times more than the Gumi average.

We can't draw conclusions from just one visit. But if we keep tracking the same litter in the same places, we can finally understand where, what and why it piles up. That data helps us decide where change should begin.

A big thank-you to the young people and their leaders who paid close attention to their streets and cared for their neighborhoods.

“On the same day, each in our own place.”
On September 20, while people in 190 countries cleaned up their own neighborhoods, young people in Korea walked routes to school, highway shoulders and early-morning streets.

The Green Action Challenge continues until October 31. If you haven't joined yet, it's not too late to start now! Young people and leaders, please join us in small actions for our neighborhoods for the rest of the campaign. 🌱

We pick up litter and collect data at the same time

Every piece of litter you pick up is saved as data: 'where, what and how many'. The maps and numbers in this newsletter were also created using the steps taken by young participants.

This activity can count toward volunteer service hours for the youth award. Join us in taking small actions for the planet!
